1. What is Botox® ?
"Botox® injection" or " Botox® shot" is the phrase most widely used to describe the procedure of administering the Allergan Botox® Cosmetic treatment. Botox® injections utilize Botulinum Toxin Type A, a therapeutic muscle-relaxing agent that works at motor nerve endings (nerves that lead to muscles). The result is the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar lines (frown lines). Botox® injections are widely used to reduce facial lines, especially frown lines, "crow's feet," and forehead lines.

2. How does the Botox® procedure work?
Several tiny injections of Botox® Cosmetic are administered directly into the muscles that cause those moderate to severe frown lines between the brows. The doctor will determine where to perform the injections by examining your ability to move select muscles in your brow area.

3. Does the treatment hurt?
No anesthesia is required for Botox® treatment. Occasionally we numb the area with an anesthetic cream or cold pack prior to injecting. Minimal discomfort may be experienced, but will dissipate quickly. Most patients compare the sensation to a pinprick. Most normal activity may be resumed immediately.

4. How long do the effects last?
Within a few hours to a couple of days after the botulinum toxin is injected into the affected muscle(s), the spasms or contractions are reduced or eliminated altogether. Within days, you should see a marked improvement in the moderate to severe frown lines, crows feet, or forehead lines, which may continue for as long as a month, and could last up to 4 months.

5. What are the side effects of Botox® treatment?
Typically the side effects of Botox® treatment are minimal. The most common Botox® side effects are minor headache, nausea or temporary eyelid droop. In rare occurrences, Botox® cosmetic can spread into neighboring muscles and cause temporary paralysis. Some patients have been known to experience bruising at the site of the injection.
People with neuromuscular disorders should consult with their physician carefully before having a Botox® injection treatment, as cardiovascular problems may arise. Likewise, those with cardiovascular disease should also pay special attention.
