The 5 Questions to Ask
Choosing the right laser treatment center makes all the difference in your laser hair removal experience. To help you, Silk Skin Laser recommends that you ask 5 questions before you begin:
1. Which laser machine are you using?
Laser hair removal technology has advanced considerably in the past 5 years. There are many different laser machines available, and you want to make sure that you are being treated with the best laser and with the setting that is right for your skin.
At Silk Skin Laser, we use the Apogee Elite laser by Cynosure. It is the only laser on the market that has laser settings for treating both dark and light skin. It is also able to treat other conditions such as vein removal. The laser also has a SmartCoolTM cooling unit, which reduces the 'rubberband snap' sensation that some clients experience during treatment. The cooler can be adjusted to the comfort level of the client.
2. Is the machine operated by a state-licensed esthetician?
To protect your health, and ensure the best possible results, the laser machine must be operated by a trained, state-licensed esthetician. All of our technicians are New York State licensed esthetician and are certified by Cynosure, our laser manufacturer.
Many facilities may have laser "trained" technicians. They are taught how to work the laser machine, but have not undergone the rigorous training and testing required by New York State. Estheticians are knowledgeable in anatomy and physiology and are able to assess your particular skin and hair needs.
3. What screening assessment do you perform to protect my health?
Before you begin any laser treatment, the esthetician must know if you have any conditions that may prevent you from getting optimal results. It is also important that you are not on certain sun-sensitizing medications.
At Silk Skin Laser, we ask you to complete a medical history form in order to identify any pre-existing conditions or medications you may be taking that may affect the results or disqualify you as a candidate for laser treatment. If a treatment center does not speak to you about your health and medications, they may miss an important contraindication.
4. Are the assessments performed at every visit?
Because a month or more may pass between each visit, it is essential for your health and safety that these screening assessments are performed before each visit.
At Silk Skin Laser, our estheticians review your medical condition before each session. If a laser treatment center is not performing a review before each treatment, they may miss an important change, which can significantly impact your results and sometimes result in damage to your skin.
5. What treatments do you include to protect my skin immediately after treatment?
Though you can resume normal activity immediately after a laser hair removal treatment, you may experience some after-effects such as redness or swelling of the treated area. Your skin requires special care after each treatment, particularly protection from the sun.
Silk Skin Laser offers immediate sun protection in the form of a mineral sun block that is SPF-30. Most sun block creams are not protective for the first 30 minutes of wear because they take time to be absorbed into the skin. Our sun block coats the skin and is effective from the moment of application.
Many treatment centers do not provide sun block protection to patients. Those that do often use a standard sun block that is not immediately effective and often of a lower SPF, providing less protection.
